THE SHORT VERSION
Our verdict
The WMM-160 is interesting for the placement freedom a separate magnetic antenna offers. It may suit a listener whose radio cannot sit in the best available reception position. The public manufacturer description does not provide enough detail to treat it as universally compatible, so the connector and supplied cable need confirming for the exact order. We would shortlist it for a particular installation problem, not on the assumption that magnetic mounting or a wideband label guarantees better results than a stock antenna.

Fit and function
Whistler describes WMM-160 as a magnetic dual-band scanner antenna for desktop and mobile use. Its page advertises broad reception coverage but does not give a complete band-by-band performance specification in the reviewed text. We have not reproduced its speed or performance marketing as tested findings.
The buying decision
Work through the installation before comparing antennas: where will the base attach, can the cable reach without being trapped, and will the antenna obstruct normal use? A magnetic base needs an appropriate mounting surface. In a vehicle, check that the proposed route does not interfere with controls, visibility or safety equipment. For a desk, test nearby locations with the current setup first. A better location is a reason to consider a separated antenna; it is not a reason to assume every separated antenna will perform equally well.
