THE SHORT VERSION
Our verdict
BC-SGPS is useful when the listening location changes often enough to make manual system selection tedious. It supplies location information to a compatible scanner, allowing the receiver's own location-based features to decide what should be scanned. It is not a navigation display and it does not make an incompatible scanner decode a new system. The best candidate is someone who already understands the receiver's programming and regularly travels between areas. A stationary listener may gain little from an additional receiver and cable arrangement.

Consider something else if
You expect GPS to unlock encrypted traffic or add new decoding formats
Reasons to consider it
- Automates a changing-location workflow
- Dedicated scanner GPS kit
- Manufacturer identifies supported receivers
Trade-offs to know
- Correct scanner cable is essential
- Does not provide radio-system compatibility by itself

Fit and function
Uniden identifies BC-SGPS as a serial-port scanner GPS kit and names BCD536HP, BCD996P2 and HomePatrol-2 in its product information. Confirm the exact cable and power arrangement for the radio before purchase. We do not extend compatibility from similar model names or from ambiguous entries in the product list.
The buying decision
Location-based scanning depends on more than obtaining coordinates. The radio's programmed geographic information, enabled service types and range settings still need to make sense for the journey. Review those settings before deciding that a GPS receiver will solve a cumbersome scanning list. Plan a location for the GPS unit and its cables that leaves the scanner accessible. If your radio already has a location function, establish whether it needs an external receiver at all. Buying a second component for an existing feature adds complexity without necessarily adding value.
