THE SHORT VERSION
Our verdict
The yellow tray is a small component with a more important role than its appearance suggests. Whistler specifies it for rechargeable NiMH AA cells in compatible handheld scanners. It should not be treated as interchangeable with the holder used for disposable cells. For a used WS1010 or WS1040 with a missing tray, it may be an essential replacement. For an owner who already has the correct tray, another one is not a capacity upgrade and does not include new batteries.
A good fit for
WS1010 or WS1040 owners replacing the rechargeable-cell holder
Consider something else if
You plan to charge disposable alkaline batteries
Reasons to consider it
- Distinct rechargeable-cell holder
- Explicit scanner fit
- Replacement for a missing essential part
Trade-offs to know
- Not a battery or standalone charger
- Incorrect cell selection is hazardous

Fit and function
Whistler identifies the yellow holder for WS1010 and WS1040 and states that it permits in-radio charging with appropriate rechargeable NiMH cells and external power. Disposable alkaline batteries must not be put through a charging arrangement. Follow the receiver's battery instructions and charging settings.
The buying decision
Inventory the trays and cells supplied with a second-hand scanner before powering it. Ask the seller what battery arrangement was used, then verify it against the manual rather than relying on memory or color alone. An external charger may be preferable for your routine, but it does not change the need for a suitable holder in the radio. This accessory is best understood as restoring the intended battery system, not as a generic tray for every Whistler handheld.
