THE SHORT VERSION
Our verdict
The BCD160DN deserves careful reading because the word digital can hide its most important boundary. It is a conventional-channel receiver, not a trunk-tracking scanner. Uniden’s October 2026 firmware adds P25 Phase I/II audio decoding, but the release notes explicitly say it does not add trunk tracking. That makes the radio potentially useful for a defined set of conventional digital channels and a poor choice for someone shopping by the P25 label alone. We would recommend it only after confirming how the target communications are organised, with the installed firmware checked before evaluating what it receives.
A good fit for
Listeners whose required digital channels can be monitored conventionally
Consider something else if
You need a receiver to follow conversations across a trunked system
Reasons to consider it
- Conventional DMR and NXDN decoding
- Free documented firmware adds P25 audio decoding
- A focused alternative when trunk tracking is unnecessary
Trade-offs to know
- No trunk tracking, including after the P25 update
- Older descriptions may omit the October 2026 firmware change

The distinction that decides the purchase
Receiving digital voice and following a trunked conversation are different requirements. If a network moves a conversation among assigned voice channels, merely decoding audio on a frequency does not supply the same listening workflow as trunk tracking. Our practical recommendation is to write down whether your target is conventional or trunked before looking at this model. That answer should carry more weight than the headline number of digital formats.
What changed in October 2026
The manufacturer’s release notes identify firmware 2.00.03, released on 6 October 2026, as adding P25 Phase I/II decoding. They also require SS software version 2.00.00 or later for PC configuration. DMR and NXDN conventional decoding remain part of the product description. Older reviews may therefore understate the current audio capability, while sellers who omit the no-trunking qualification may overstate its usefulness for a public-safety network.
Setting up a focused listening list
Use the model-specific software and update process, rather than the Sentinel instructions for a different Uniden family. Start with one known active conventional channel and record its required settings before expanding. A small verified list gives you a clear diagnostic baseline. If you hear intermittent traffic, check channel use and programming before assuming the receiver is faulty or that a higher-gain antenna will solve an organisation-of-system problem.
When to move to another model
The BCD260DN provides the installed-format version of this conventional-digital buying path. Compare the BCD325P2 or BCD436HP when supported trunk tracking is necessary. An SDS model is a separate consideration for difficult simulcast conditions. The BCD160DN should be bought because its deliberately narrower capabilities fit the listening list, not as a speculative cheap substitute for a fully suitable trunk-tracking receiver.
A practical check before ordering
Make a short compatibility worksheet with one row per target: frequency, digital mode, conventional or trunked, and encryption status. If any essential row requires trunk tracking, treat that as a reason to compare another receiver before purchasing. This small check protects against the particularly easy mistake of reading the new P25 feature as a complete change of scanner category.
Accessories with documented model fit
These links use the exact-model source records. Read the individual fit and electrical requirements before ordering; a listed connector or model does not establish every use case.
