THE SHORT VERSION
Our verdict
The BCD260DN is the installed-format choice for a specific conventional-digital listening list. Its updated P25 audio capability makes older descriptions incomplete, but it remains essential not to confuse that update with trunk tracking. We would consider it for a desk or vehicle station where the target frequencies and formats are already known. If the primary goal is following a trunked police network, start with a suitable trunk-tracking model instead. Its value is strongest when the narrower capability is a good match, rather than when it is being asked to imitate a more expensive category of receiver.
A good fit for
A desktop or mobile station monitoring known conventional digital channels
Consider something else if
Your priority is following a trunked public-safety system
Reasons to consider it
- Conventional DMR and NXDN decoding
- Free documented P25 audio firmware update
- Base/mobile hardware for a permanent setup
Trade-offs to know
- P25 decoding does not add trunk tracking
- Requires checking firmware and system architecture

Start with the target system
A list of agencies is not yet a receiver specification. Identify the channels, voice formats and whether the communications depend on a trunked control channel. The BCD260DN’s design is most straightforward to evaluate when that work has been done. Conventional listening can be a purposeful hobby on its own, so the absence of trunk tracking is not automatically a defect. It is a purchase boundary that must match your goals.
Read the current firmware notes
Uniden’s 6 October 2026 release adds P25 Phase I/II audio decoding through firmware 2.00.03, and explicitly excludes trunk tracking. The documentation also identifies an updated SS programming-software requirement. That distinction matters when comparing older reviews or used equipment. Ask which firmware is installed and update through the official process before judging the advertised capability. The change does not imply that encrypted audio becomes available.
Make the installation practical
The base/mobile format calls for a planned antenna, power and display position. Consider whether you need a fixed listening station or would actually prefer the BCD160DN’s portable arrangement. Keep programming focused during the first setup: one confirmed channel is a better test than a large unverified list. Record changes to channel settings so unsuccessful adjustments can be reversed without rebuilding the entire configuration.
Where it sits among alternatives
Compare the BCD996P2 when supported digital trunking is required in a similar installed format. The BCT15X can make sense when your requirements are analog and match its supported systems. The BCD260DN occupies a different niche between those choices, combining conventional digital formats with a fixed-station form factor. Decide from the communications you want, not from an assumption that every product with BCD in its name follows the same systems.
A practical check before ordering
For a second receiver beside an existing trunk-tracking radio, this model may deserve a different evaluation than it would as your only scanner. A dedicated conventional list can leave the other receiver free for another task. That is a possible setup strategy, not a reception-performance claim; it only makes sense if you actually have compatible conventional traffic you want to monitor.
